INTRODUCTION

Welcome to geometry.  This is the branch of mathematics in which we study the characteristics of all kinds of shapes.  Everywhere you look are examples of different shapes, both 2- and 3-dimensional.  You will gain both theoretical knowledge and hands-on skills useful in the “real world.”

HOMEWORK PHILOSOPHY

Although math can be fun, it also requires hard work.  Homework is the method through which most of your learning will take place.  It is through homework that you will develop the skills necessary to be successful in algebra.  Only by working through assignments will you be able to learn all that is expected.  Some assignments will be longer than others but all will have the same point value in determining grades.

All homework must be done in pencil, and should include your name, class and period, and assignment (section and problems) in the upper right hand corner.  To receive credit, work must be shown, not just answers.  Please skip a line between exercises to avoid confusion.

Assignments will be graded at the beginning of class.  It is your responsibility to have it ready to turn in at the beginning of class.  (A good place to keep assignments is in your algebra book.)  If an assignment is incomplete or missing, you may be assigned after-school detention to complete it for half credit.  Otherwise, late work receives no credit.

If you are absent unexpectedly (illness, etc.), you will have a maximum of one week from the date of the absence to complete and submit the assignment given on that day.  An assignment due the day of your absence is due upon your return to class.  If you miss a test, you will take it upon your return to class.  It is your responsibility to contact me with questions and for help with the work missed.

CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS

You will be expected to show respect for everyone in the classroom each day.  Some ways to demonstrate this are:

bullet

Follow school rules.

bullet

Have all required materials each day.

bullet

Be in your seat, ready to begin class, when the bell rings.

GRADING

Semester grades will be determined as follows:

Homework................................. 30%

Quizzes...................................... 20%

Tests.......................................... 50%

Please remember that even though homework counts for only 30% of your grade, only by understanding the homework will you be able to perform well on the assessments.

MATERIALS

You must bring the following items to class each day:

bullet

Notebook (or notebook section) dedicated to math notes

bullet

Textbook

bullet

Paper for assignments (not torn from a spiral notebook)

bullet

Pencils

bullet

Pen (for checking assignments)

Scientific calculator

EXTRA CREDIT WORK

In general, there is no extra credit work assigned.  If there is, it will be made available to all students.  However, each quarter your lowest quiz score and homework score will be excused.

ONLINE RESOURCES

You will be expected to look at my website when you are absent.  You will find the assignment schedule, Power Point presentations, etc., and it is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The textbook publisher has also provided a companion website which provides homework support, including extra examples, problem solving help, and more.  The site is: www.mcdougallittell.com, and the student access code is MCDIB5VTK7EHW.
